Conway in autumn by automat.

While spring flowers are blooming and winter is loosing its grip on my home-town of Cape Town most of the wired world is falling into autumn. Leaves are turning, days are getting shorter, mornings nippier and there is a dazzling display of rich, warm colour everywhere you look. This is a great time to be out as a photographer.

For inspiration I would check out the Flickr autumn and fall tags (hey smugmug users, how do you show your autumn/fall keywords but rated by interest rather than date?) Blog super-hero Kottke also linked to a great foliage map which will guide photographers in the States. The map shows what areas will turn in what months.

If you have a film camera handy then I’d recommend you leave the Fuji Velvia behind and crack open some Kodak Ektachrome as it is generally warmer. Don’t forget B&W either whether you are film or digital as those reds and oranges can be striking with a red filter on the lens or some Channel Mixing in Photoshop. I know fashion photographers love autumn too as the heaps of leaves work well with coats and summer tanned models.

I invite all ilikecameras readers to email us their autumn photographs, or leave links in the comment section. We would love to feature some and might just ask you how a few were done for our Behind the photograph series.
